Many cities have forgotten what it is like to be human so when Jaime Lerner reinvented his city in Curitiba, Brazil people took notice. This TED talk is briliant as he explains how city planners can think differently to merge what exists into a more coherent and accessible plan. He gives cities a three year timeframe to complete the process.
Funny, I just got a survey call on behalf of the local transportation agency for Vancouver, Translink, the other day. Their survey questions would suggest that they are a long way from thinking in this way. Although Vancouver is a very livable city, as costs and mobility goes it is a long way from being sustainable. City planners everywhere and citizens who are inspired to act locally to improve mobility for all, will gain from hearing Jaime Lerner's message.
So if a city can be reinvented in three years or less, what about the corporate structure and achieving a healthier relationship with consumers, the planet and nature's resources? It is all in our minds, our visions, hopes and dreams. After that, implementation (or execution in the business world) is easy.
